Three Mora wrestlers make their way to State podium

Mora’s wrestling team, along with nine individuals, made their way to the Minnesota state wrestling meet at the XCel Center in St. Paul, and competed from Thursday, March 2, through Saturday, March 4. When all the dust settled, Lindsey Nosbush, Nora Houglum and Nathan Nelson made their way to the podium. All three earned All-State accolades.

Mora, as a team, came in as the seventh ranked team in Class AA, and competed on Thursday, March 2, versus New Prague and Dawson-Boyd/Lac qui Parle/Montevideo United. They were first matched up against a very good New Prague team, who eventually took second place, losing to Simley.

Despite the early exit from the tournament, the team finished 24-4 on the year.

“Not making excuses, but having Carter Gmahl and Anthony Nelson out really hurt the team at state,” said head coach Tom Youngblom. “It’s not like other sports. New Prague and Dawson were able to move their guys around and get better matchups. This ultimately proved to be too much as we were not deep enough to combat those moves. There are many things to be proud of. I hate to let a poor state team performance put a damper on one of the best overall teams and seasons we have had come through, which is a very successful Mora wrestling program!”

Along with an impressive 24-4 record, the program sent nine individuals to state, which is the most ever. “We had three individual placers (Three All-State Wrestlers), which is tied for the most ever individual placing in Mora history. The fact that we were there again, back-to-back years is pretty exciting. We obviously didn’t finish the way we wanted, but we do have 17 of the 21 members of our team coming back.”

Mora will start preparing for a run at a three-pete come next season.

Nelson, Nosbush, and Houglum place at state

Mora junior Nathan Nelson, who won his 100th victory back on Jan. 7, entered the state tournament as the sixth ranked wrestler at 132 lb, and finished with a sixth place medal on Saturday, March 4.

“Coming into the state tournament I was ranked sixth via the Guillotine,” said Nelson. “I was kind of annoyed by the ranking because prior to the state tournament I was ranked third all year. Knowing that I dropped three spots in the rankings I knew that I had something to prove. The first day of individuals I thought I wrestled very well. I went 2-1 overall. I was a little upset that I lost my second match because it was a close and hard fought battle for the full six minutes. My goal of becoming a state finalist didn’t happen but I knew I could come back and fight for third. The last day of individuals was

a lot of hard work. I had to win my first match, which I did, to place. Winning that match was very important because I knew If I had lost that match, I wouldn’t be able to stand on the podium. I lost my second match in close fashion to a tough kid from Totino-Grace. After losing that match I wasn’t mentally prepared and ended up losing my fifth place match also. I wanted to place a lot higher at state this year because I wanted to prove I was worthy of placing top three, but nonetheless I was content with a sixth place finish.”

Nelson finished with a sixth place finish last year too. “It was kind of like deja-vu from last year but I was still happy that I could be awarded all state for the second year in a row. I just know that I’ll have to come back even better and stronger for next year because I am not fully satisfied with my results. I also want to give a shout out to Tom Youngblom, Ryan Sjodin, Brian Sjodin, Brent Nelson and Jeff Olstead. If they weren’t in my corner, in every match I wrestled, I would have a tough time succeeding. They help me become the best wrestler that I can be and push me to be the best. I love the atmosphere at the Xcel. It’s so cool to be wrestling in front of thousands of people and to succeed as well.”
